The Mackintosh Legacy

In designing the Glasgow School of Art , architect and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 - 1928) embraced every aspect of the space, including  moving between rooms. Flower alcoves were built at the entrance to each painting studio, with instructions for stems to be placed daily. Mackintosh saw the vital connection between nature, harmony and mood for the aspiring artist.

The devastating fires at the Glasgow School of Art touched many people not least the painters and artists who went through the famous doors.

Here are some images of the Art School:

Peter Graham ROI leads a Guided Tour of  The Royal Institute of Oil Painters' Annual Exhibition, Mall Galleries , The Mall, London SW1

Friday 30th November - 12 noon -  Exhibition tour (approximately 50 mins - free with entry to the Mall Galleries)

The ROI is the only major, exclusively oil painting,  Open Submission Exhibition in the UK. Over 300 selected works.

On the tour we will discuss for the first time the prize winning works from the  young painter's awards (for Artists aged 35 or younger). This  is an excellent showcase  for new painters- and a major part of The ROI education programme.

The tour takes in paintings from senior ROI Fellows and  Members like Ken Howard RA -his paintings are always keenly anticipated and a delight to the eye.

WE will take a look at the non members' paintings  Now more that ever before there is  a frisson of excitement as  new artist's work come through the doors of the Mall Galleries -and  I always give my recommendations for a good purchase. This opening week is the time to buy before it goes..

I will be discussing  members' work, including my own group of paintings (including 'Cassis Roses' above). The tour will delve into the artist's background, influences and achievements as we go round.

I look forward to seeing you there!

History

The Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), founded in 1882, is the major Great British Royal Society for Oil Painting. The ROI has around 65 elected members and the annual exhibition is a showcase of the finest works created throughout the year. The ROI was granted its Royal status in 1909 by King Edward V11. We are always aware of the high standard set for us by our illustrious forebears, such as Alma Tadema, Walter Sickert, Dame Laura Knight, Fantin Latour and even Rodin.
